MATERIAL STUDIES

Exploring matter and light to spark new ideas and ways of making.

LIGHT FORMS
Light Forms are individual glass blocks that aggregate together in various tessellations to form novel patterns and light effects.
LONG RANGE
Long Range deploys the geometrical modification of glass at a variety of scales to access a continuous radient of acoustic behavior: reflective, diffusive, absorptive, and transmissive.
CATENARY SLUMPED GLASS Glass Cast/Specimen/Avialae
A series of installations that uses slumped glass techniques to create large volumes of glass.
LIGHT FIXTURES Exhale/Diffuse Globes
Creating the lights that occupy spaces with us.
LIGHT + GLAZE Lune
Careful attention to coloration and reflection in the application of glaze and light.
ROOFLESS Hideout
Working carefully with an existing building to transform it into a volume of light and growth.

Our materials carry so many stories and enrich the qualities that surround us. Intensifying the physical impact, the optical effects of darkness and light are also primary drivers in our material investigations, bringing forward readings and qualities impossible to achieve in any other way.

BUILT PROJECTS

Buildings, installations, and objects. These are our works that live out in the world.

SECRET SKY 2019/Hume, MI
Secret Sky is the structural reworking of a barn in rural Michigan to allow the sky to enter and pass through the building.
ECLIPSE 2019/Toledo, OH
Eclipse is a prototype for an architectural wall that highlights the use of glass in compression and the optical effects of volume color.

LUNE 2022/Umbertide, Italy
Lune is a series of moons hidden within a castle in Italy. Made from local clay, the works are pulled from the land and suspended out of place.
SECOND STORY 2011/Filnt, MI & Chicago, IL
Second Story is a delicate cast and translation of the physical massing of a threatened historic home.
SALVAGED LANDSCAPE
2010-2013/Detroit, MI

Salvaged Landscape was created while orchestrating the demolition of an arson-damaged home in Detroit.

WEATHERIZING 2010/Detroit, MI
Weatherizing is the re-working of an abandoned garage to create a glowing effect that pierces the walls while preserving the dark volume from prior electrical theft and boarded-up windows.

UNLIT 2012/Venice Biennale, Italy
Unlit traces and honors the sublime dark volumes throughout  Detroit. It was made by echoing the process of deadening the light leaks in an abandoned space as windows are boarded up.
OVERNIGHT 2016/UMMA Museum
Overnight captures an instant in Detroit when its extensive darkness was displaced by new streetlights that began to mis-register the urban landscape.
SPECIMEN 2012/Grand Rapids, MI
Specimen evokes a peculiar creature of irregular origins,  suspended in air, curious in its natural form and artificial in its existence.
AVIALAE 2015/Lille, France
Avialae suspends in the air, out of place and time. Appearing natural in form, it is entirely artificial in its existence.
CURFEW 2014/Rome, Italy
Curfew is a study of nighttime, the ghosting of a darkened window; it is made of strange and violent spatial lines embedded with candlewicks.

TRESPASS 2014/Rome, Italy
Trespass works with an existing dark space to evoke and amplify the mystery, fear, and delicacy of a space as it falls into darkness.

DEAD WIRE 2015/Lille, France
Dead Wire is a spatial interruption into the extensive copper wire scrapping industry of Detroit.

For each of these works, the story of their making is just as rich as the completed result. Moments of inspiration often emerge in one project, passing that spark on to the next. In most cases the work celebrates the quietness of the time and space of solitude.
